Congratulations on welcoming a new Maine Coon kitten! Here are some tips to help your new friend feel comfortable and happy in their new home:
Prepare Their Space
• Safe Space: Set up a small, quiet, cozy area where they can adjust to their new environment. A small room with their essentials (litter box, bed, food, and water) is perfect.
• Litter Box: Choose an x-large, litter box that’s easy to access. Maine Coons grow big, so plan for a spacious one!
• Scratching Posts: Maine Coons love to scratch. Get sturdy scratching posts or cat trees to keep them entertained and protect your furniture.
Feeding & Nutrition
• High-Quality Food: Maine Coons require kitten food for 2 years. They’re started on Science Diet Kitten mixed with Royal Canin Maine Coon Kitten food. This has everything they need to grow and mature.
• Feeding Schedule: Our kittens are provided with unlimited access to food throughout the day. They are allowed to eat at their convenience.
• Water: Maine Coons love fresh water. Make sure to change the water at least once a day. Place multiple water bowls around your home to encourage hydration. Some cats drink more when they have easy access in different locations. Maine Coons prefer to have their water away from their food.
• Bowls: We suggest ceramic or glass. These are easy to clean and do not harbor bacteria. You will need wide, shallow dishes for food and a wide, heavy dish for water. The wide, shallow helps to prevent whisker fatigue and the wide, heavy dish prevents them from spilling water, they love to play in their water.
Socialization & Playtime
• Gentle Introduction: Introduce them slowly to other pets and family members. Let them explore at their own pace. Maine Coons are very social, they love to be with their people and included in activities.
• Interactive Toys: Maine Coons are intelligent and playful. Provide interactive toys to stimulate their mind and hunting instincts.
Health & Grooming
• Vet Check-Up: Schedule a vet visit for a health check and the remainder of vaccinations. We start vaccinations at 6 weeks and they will need to continue that schedule every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks of age.
• Grooming Routine: Maine Coons have long, thick fur. Regular brushing (2-3 times a week) will prevent matting. Trim their nails on a regular basis, we do every other week, adults will not require nail trims this frequently. We have started grooming early to get them accustomed to it.
Bonding & Training
• Spend Quality Time: Sit with them, play, and talk gently. This helps them bond and feel secure.
• Litter Training: They're already litter trained, they will need to learn their new home and location of their litter box. They’re generally quick learners. Giving them a smaller area in their new home will help them establish where their litter box is.
Thank you for choosing Sovereign Maine Coons for your new family member. We hope you love them as much as we do!
